Hi from Aunt Laura

Hi Ben and everyone else, We just came home from Robben's basketball game. It was a good game with them winning it 57 to 82. Robben's knee is getting better, after the second time of being decapitated ( knees can have this as well as heads,) so that was good also. We went out for supper with Robben, two of his teammates T.J. and Andrew, and their parents at the Nederlander in Orange City. Robben is doing well at college. He hardly ever comes home, and it's only 21 miles away, but if he likes college that much, I guess that's good. I miss him though. It was fun to sit and eat and talk with him and his friends. As we talked, the topic of this web site came up and since I shrink from using the computer in everyday life as I am not very skilled in it's use, my interest was piqued enough so that when we got home I asked Bob to help me get on so I could see the Christmas pictures etc. I am glad I did. I was glad to see everyone again, even if it was only via pictures. Ben, you asked for birthdays for the calendar so since I'm writing this I'll just give them to you now. Robben's is August 29. He will be 22. A grown up and it happened so fast! Bob's is coming right up, Feb. l6. He will be 59 years old. He's having a good time being retired and does not wish to return to the workforce as of yet. Some day, if he gets bored, maybe, but as of yet he's showing no signs of this happening. Aleisa, who is back at T.C.U in Fort Worth, has a birthday Mar.16. She will be 24. I can't believe she's that old either, but she is. She is having a much better semester this semester than last semester, which was quite a load, for both of us. For her- the work, for me- the worry that she would make it and hoping she could hold up under the stress as she didn't even have time to take a walk, most of the time. It's going better this semester. She seems to be enjoying her classes more, has more time for walks, and even had two of her professors offer to help publish a couple of her papers from last semester. Way to go Aleisa Rose. I love you! My birthday is November 3 and since I was born in l951 that makes me, let me think, (it's true as you get older your memory gets worse:( I will be 57! Some days I really feel like it too! However, Thank God for good days! Anyway, Ben, I'm not sure if this is what you had in mind when you encouraged us to post stuff on here but here is my attempt. I hope everyone is well and we will see each other soon. Love Aunt Laura

This is exactly the type of info that I was hoping we would be able to share! Thanks for posting and keeping us up to date on the happenings of the family! I'm glad it was only Robben's knees that were decapitated! Is he getting any playing time?

I will get the birthday's added to the calendar in the next couple of days unless Steph beats me to it!

Does having your knee decapitated mean that the knee cap slips out of place? Do they just pop it back in and keep on playing? Does he need to have it surgically repaired. It all sounds very unpleasant. Yikes!

Hi Ben and Steph, I just now figured out how to read the comments. I didn't even realize there was such a thing until I grilled Bob about where to find Danny's stuff. Thanks for putting the birthday's on the calendar. Also Steph, what happens to decapitated kneecaps is that when they get violently knocked from the side, (at least that's how it happened to Robben the first time) your kneecap slides out of the bone cradle God made for it and off to one side - in a painful way.:( Then, it has to pop back in, which will probably happen from the jolt of hitting the floor as you fall. You must then miss practice and try to rehabilitate it. This means going to the physical therapist to get a list of exercises, which you must do religiously to hopefully stop this from happening again. As for playing, Robben was playing against Doane last Wednesday, had seven points in the first half, a couple of rebounds and other good stuff and he went up for a rebound with two other guys and came down hard, rolling his ankle, which is now sprained. He now has a new list of exercises, I suspect, and more physical therapy. Still, it was awful fun watching him play.:) I hope he heals fast but also hope he won't try to play before it can handle it. That basketball is a tough sport. Believe me!
It's hard to see your kid rolling on the floor with pain on his face. It's harder for the kid, I guess. There's only one more month of games and then Robben can have the summer to rest it. Now that I've answered your question, I'll see if I can enter this. Love to you guys. Aunt Laura

I played girls basketball in high school. The worst visible injury I had was a black eye. I did, however, come down with the ball. Robben must love it in order to endure the pain!

Way to go Steph! I didn't know you played. Did you play all through High School? What position did you play? Aunt Laura

Well I went to a very small Christian school and as a result, was able to play both JV and Varsity for two years and then Varsity for my last two years. I mostly played forward but I did play every position at one time. I loved having the opportunity to play but I doubt I'd have made any team at a bigger school.

So I was poking around on this thing which I think is called the "Internet," and I came across something that could use correcting. Though I am sure you suspected it, I feel I must interject here and inform you all that "decapitation" is not, in fact, the proper term for the injurious condition of my knees. I have now subluxed (partially dislocated) each knee once and fully dislocated the right one on a separate occasion. Aside from this you have been well informed by mother/aunt Laura. I imagined you are all very relieved that this mistake has been righted before it could do any real damage. I will continue to monitor this site for further instances of misinformation. Watch yourself mama.
